The blueberry barrens and associated habitats support several species that are rare or endangered in Maine, including grasshopper sparrow, upland sandpiper, vesper sparrow, and horned lark. In late summer, the plains are filled with the spectacular purple blooms of the northern blazing star.

Over 1,000 acres are managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. See map.
