SUMMARY: September 15th - A Birding Tour of Jamaica - with Doug Hitchcox - 
DESCRIPTION:An Orangequit\, an endemic species in Jamaica – photo by Doug Hitchcox \nIn March 2026\, Maine Audubon led a birding tour to Jamaica\, one of the hotbeds of avian endemism in the West Indies with at least 28 species that can be found there and nowhere else. This week long tour visited some of the best known birding locations on the island\, from the forests in the Blue Mountains National Park to the famous feeders at Rocklands Bird Sanctuary\, and of course no trip is complete without a trip to the local sewage ponds! Just five months before the trip\, Hurricane Melissa made a “catastrophic landfall” in Jamaica that caused unprecedented destruction. \n \n  \n  \nA Jamaican Spindalis – photo by Doug Hitchcox \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJoin us to hear Doug Hitchcox\, Maine Audubon’s Staff Naturalist and one of the guides on the Jamaica trip\, recounting the trip with a focus on the birds\, how they adapted to hurricane damage\, plus culinary and cultural highlights! This will be a fun program for anyone planning their own trip or hoping to bird vicariously through the stories\, and you’ll get the latest scoop on what tours are coming next. \nOn Tuesday\, September 15th\, at 7 p.m.\, York County Audubon is pleased to host YCA Board member Doug Hitchcox who will present this program. Doug is the Staff Naturalist for Maine Audubon. In his free time\, Doug is one of Maine’s eBird reviewers\, owner and moderator of the ‘Maine-birds’ listserv\, and member of the Maine Bird Records Committee.  He also served as the Outreach Coordinator for the Maine Bird Atlas\, and writes a regular nature column for the Portland Press Herald. \nThis program will be presented in-person in the Mather Auditorium of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. DESCRIPTION:A Ruddy Turnstone in the wrack at South Point in Biddeford Pool – photo by Bill Grabin  \nIt may be peak summer but believe it or not\, fall shorebird migration is in full swing!  Dave Tucker will lead our August bird walk at Hills Beach in Biddeford\, one of the best locations in Maine to look for shorebirds and seabirds in late summer. Our walk will take place at low tide\, allowing us to walk on the sand bars that connect the mainland to Basket and Stage Islands. \nHills Beach is a prime spot to look for terns and gulls\, as well as several species of shorebirds such as Semipalmated Sandpipers\, Semipalmated Plovers\, Sanderlings\, White-rumped Sandpipers\, Ruddy Turnstones\, Piping Plovers\, Oystercatchers\, and Black-bellied Plovers. Arctic Terns\, Whimbrels\, Baird Sandpipers\, and Stilt Sandpipers are also possibilities. \nThe group will meet at 8am at the Marblehead Boat Launch (16 Marblehead Ln\, Biddeford\, ME) and carpool from there 3 miles to the walk location\, where there is much more limited parking. Birders should be prepared to walk on soft sand in direct sunlight. \nBeginning birders are most welcome. We will be happy to introduce you to the joy of birding\, if you’re new to it. More experienced birders are most welcome as well! Please bring binoculars if you have them\, but we’ll have some to lend if you don’t. SUMMARY: July 18th - NEW START TIME - A Bird Walk at the Orris Falls Conservation Area in South Berwick - 
DESCRIPTION:                                 A Green Heron stalking – photo by Phil Stone \nOur July walk in our tour of different habitats will take us to the Orris Falls Conservation Area in South Berwick.  It’s a a 213 acre preserve with 3.76 miles of trails\, conserved beginning in 1999 by the Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT).  This diverse habitat features beaver wetlands\, the gorge of Orris Falls\, the Littlefield Homestead\, a large glacial erratic aptly named Balancing Rock\, and the Big Bump with views of Mount Agamenticus from its summit when the trees are free of leaves.  FMI:  https://gwrlt.org/orris-falls-conservation-area/ \nIt’s an excellent birding spot\, with 135 species reported there so far.  Highlights include Scarlet Tanager\, Indigo Bunting\, Pileated Woodpecker\, Green Heron\, Winter Wren\, Pine Warbler\, Black-throated Green Warbler\, and Ovenbird.  FMI:  https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2891623 \nWe’ll be meeting at 7 a.m. at  the parking lot at 551 Emery’s Bridge Road in South Berwick.  Be careful not to use the pin in Google Maps\, which will take you to a different entrance on Thurrell Road. Birding mostly by ear\, we’ll walk about a mile through deep forest to several beaver ponds then watch patiently to see what birds show themselves. There’s a new great blue heron nest at the ponds this year. We’ll stop by Balancing Rock\, a massive boulder perched improbably on a small rock\, and visit the deep gorge and rapids that give Orris Falls its name. \nWhile the path is wide and well-traveled\, there are rocks and roots and several short but moderately steep sections. So use good footwear. Also\, bug spray is highly recommended. \nBeginning birders are most welcome. We will be happy to introduce you to the joy of birding\, if you’re new to it. SUMMARY: June 16th - A Record-setting Maine Big Year – An Experiment in Birding – with Stacey Huth and Noah Gibb - 
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, two friends\, Stacey Pazar Huth (a scientist) and Noah Gibb (an avid birder\, photographer\, and birding tour guide) embarked on a Maine Big Year and discovered how their team effort was a winning combination. What started as an occasional bird walk at the local marsh grew into the concept of their Integrated Birding Process and “The Experiment.” They combined top-notch birding expertise with remarkable strategic planning. The outcome resulted in a new state of Maine record of 332 species of birds seen in a calendar year! \nOn Tuesday\, June 16th\, join the authors as they present “An Experiment In Birding.”  Their presentation touches on how they succeeded and includes select readings from the book.  Paperback copies available for purchase at the event. The authors will be honored to sign your copy of the book. \nAbout the Authors: \nStacey Pazar Huth\, PhD\, has made Southern Maine her home for the past 35 years. She holds a doctorate in chemistry\, and spent more than 30 years as a corporate leader and scientist. She led teams in the research and development of diagnostic products in both the human health and veterinary markets. Stacey is an active member and Trustee of the Maine Audubon Society and the proud mother of her adult daughter. Now an empty nester\, she has returned to her lifelong love of birds and enjoys exploring Maine with her birding friends. \nNoah Gibb has been a Mainer all his life. He has earned a solid birding reputation in Maine’s birding community for his keen visual and auditory bird identification skills\, calm demeanor\, and sense of humor. In addition to his full-time job\, he owns and operates a birding tour business\, Noah’s Birding Tours\, LLC. DESCRIPTION:A male Eastern Towhee\, a bird regularly seen and heard at the Wells Reserve.\nJoin us at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm every other Saturday this summer starting May 16th for a guided bird walk around the Reserve property.  Beginners are welcome.  Please bring binoculars if you have them. We’ll have some “loaners” available as well. \nThese walks are free (with site admission) and open to the public.  However\, space will be limited and reservations are required.  To register\, please go to this link. \nThe additional dates are 5/30\, 6/13\, 6/27\, 7/11\, 7/25 and 8/8.  We meet in the parking lot at 7:30 a.m\, and walks typically last about 2 hours.

SUMMARY: May 23rd - A Celebration of Fish and Rivers on World Fish Migration Day - 
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on Saturday\, May 23rd for a celebration of fish and rivers on World Fish Migration Day. \nTEN great organizations will be participating!!! \nIn alphabetical order:  Eldridge Brothers Fly Shop\, the Kennebunk Conservation Commission\, Kennebunk Land Trust\, the Kennebunk River Restoration Committee\, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust\, Maine Rivers\, the Mousam and Kennebunk Rivers Alliance\, the Planeteers of Southern Maine\, the Sebago Chapter of Trout Unlimited\, and York County Audubon! \nThere will be a wide variety of exhibits and activities for all ages.  From fly casting and fly tying demos and lessons to activities for younger fans of fish and rivers.  We will be joined by scientists\, including USM biologist Dr. Karen Wilson\, who will be able to answer questions about sea-run fish. This should also be a good opportunity to see alewives and shad on their spring migration. \nThe location is Rogers Pond beside the Mousam River off of Water Street in Kennebunk.  The hours are 1 to 4.  Parking is available at Rogers Pond\, but also beside and behind the Kennebunk Sewer District offices across Water Street from the entrance to the pond.  Rain date is Sunday\, May 24th. \nWe hope to see you!

SUMMARY: May 19th - Exploring the Life and Times of an Extraordinary Bird: the Purple Martin - with Anna Forsman - 
DESCRIPTION:The extraordinary Purple Martin is North America’s largest swallow.  It’s a beautifully iridescent colonial nester\, with a distinctive liquid gurgling call.  Purple martins were once a common sight in summer all over the East Coast of the United States\, but their populations have significantly declined over the past half-century. In Maine\, where they used to be found all over the state\, they have experienced a precipitous 95 percent decline in the last 50 years:  https://www.maine.gov/ifw/fish-wildlife/wildlife/species-information/birds/purple-martin-landlords.html  There are now just a handful of active colonies in a few towns.  Dr. Anna Forsman wants to better understand why that is the case. \nThe focus of her research at Colby College is understanding how birds\, like purple martins\, interact with bacteria\, viruses\, and parasites in their environments. She is also interested in how environmental factors like insect availability and climate affect immune system function in wild birds. Last year\, the Pooper Snoopers community science project that she created\, received fecal samples from over 200 Purple Martin colonies in the U.S.\, including the one established by York County Audubon along the Mousam River in Kennebunk.  DNA analysis of these samples will reveal the insect diet composition of these birds from across their breeding range. \nAnna Forsman earned her doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology at Cornell University. She studied Purple Martins for years through her postdoctoral work at the University of Central Florida\, where she established the UCF Purple Martin Project. Three years ago\, she joined the faculty of Colby College as an assistant professor of biology. She has studied cavity nesting birds for more than 20 years. \nThis program will be presented at 7 p.m. on Tuesday\, May 19th\, in the Mather Auditorium at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. The entrance to the parking area is off Skinner Mill Road in Wells.  It will be free and open to all ages\, and no registration is required for attending the program in person. DESCRIPTION:Black and White Warbler – photo by Britney Fox Hover\nYork County Audubon is pleased to announce that we’ll be hosting a bird walk each month in a different location.  The May walk will be at Highland Farm Preserve in York\, on Saturday\, May 9th from 7:30 am to 9:30 am.  We’ll be meeting at the Highland Farm parking area.  The Preserve is located at 321 Cider Hill Road (Route 91) in York. \nYellow Warbler – photo by Seth Davis\nWe’ll be hoping to see some warblers and other  migrants\, as well as other year-round resident species. \nBeginning birders are most welcome.  We will be happy to introduce you to the joy of birding\, if you’re new to it.  More experienced birders are most welcome as well!  Please bring binoculars if you have them\, but we’ll have some to lend if you don’t.  These walks are provided at no charge and advance registration is not required. \nAlso on the morning of May 9th\, York Land Trust will be hosting a 40th Anniversary Native Plant Sale & Bake Sale from 9 am till noon.  So please stop by there after the walk.  FMI:  https://www.yorklandtrust.org/event/native-plant-sale-2026/
