Kennebunk Plains, July 6, 2013

York County Audubon Posted on July 10, 2013 by adminJuly 10, 2013

Nine of us took a tour of Kennebunk Plains. It was a very hot and humid day, 75 degrees at 7:00 turning to 85 by 10:00 am. We still saw a wide variety of birds. Excellent looks and clear songs of the Upland sandpiper, Grasshopper sparrow, and Eastern meadowlarks. One of the group reported that he added 4 “life birds” to his list. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning. 1 Mile, 150 Minutes Observers: 9 1 Turkey Vulture 2 Red-tailed Hawk 6 Upland Sandpiper 4 Mourning Dove 1 American Kestrel 1 Eastern Phoebe 2 Eastern Kingbird 2 … Continue reading →

Savage Preserve, South Berwick, for Butterflies and Dragonflies: July 14, 2012

York County Audubon Posted on July 14, 2012 by HarlequinJuly 14, 2012

Twelve adults and two young folks (Sue Bickford’s grandchildren) met at 9 am at the Savage Preserve in South Berwick for our bejeweled and bedazzled walk. Thank goodness for the young folks. They caught the majority of the butterflies and dragonflies for Sue to identify. The Calico Pendants amazed us with their orange saddlebags, red faces, and wing dots. The butterflies of the day included Cloudless Sulfurs, American Copper, Monarch nectaring on milkweed, one of the Blues, Common Wood Nymph, and Silver-spotted Skipper. Birds included Chipping Sparrow, American Goldfinch, Common Yellowthroat, Downy Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, a family of … Continue reading →

Hamilton House, South Berwick: June 9, 2012

York County Audubon Posted on June 30, 2012 by ScottJune 30, 2012

Magnificent weather encouraged 17 people to arrive at Historic New England’s Hamilton House property in South Berwick on June 9 for our second annual bird walk at this tranquil and beautiful site. Barn swallows coursed over the field as we climbed a gentle rise to get the sun at our backs, but songbirds were a bit of a challenge to see in tall grass and thick foliage. With a mix of experienced birders and novices, we slowly but surely introduced various species to the beginners. For many, the highlight was discovering male and female bobolinks carrying food for nest-bound young. … Continue reading →

Intervale Marshes: May 5, 2012

York County Audubon Posted on June 1, 2012 by BillJune 1, 2012

On Saturday, May 5th, veteran Maine naturalist Bill Hancock led a group of birders on an exploration of the Intervale Marsh in New Gloucester, Maine. It’s an area of exceptional habitat, much of it protected by the Royal River Conservation Trust. While we were a little too early for many of the migrants, we still saw a good number of birds. Our highlights were great up close visits with a couple of Virginia Rails and a couple of Marsh Wrens. Afterwards, at Bill’s suggestion, we continued our birding up the adjacent Woodman Road, and were delighted to be greeted by … Continue reading →

Cumberland County: April 28, 2012

York County Audubon Posted on May 1, 2012 by adminMay 1, 2012

Seven hardy souls joined the York County Audubon Society on its Saturday April 28th walk, led by Rob Speirs, canvasing Portland’s Stroudwater Marsh, Capisic Park, Evergreen Cemetery, and River Point Conservation Area in Falmouth on a blustery day. Rob began with a description of the output from NEXRAD Radar, showing extremely light movement of birds overnight, due to a high pressure system that’s blocking migration into the northeast. The high pressure system parked overhead, chill air and stiff breeze conspired to put a damper on the birds, but the congenial and upbeat group was motivated to compile a respectable list, … Continue reading →

Sanford Sewage Treatment Facility: October 16, 2011

York County Audubon Posted on October 16, 2011 by adminNovember 14, 2011

Ten of us joined leader Andy Aldrich at the sewage ponds for a busy 3 hours of birding under mostly cloudy skies. It was breezy but warm as we ambled around the productive property. Highlights included pipits in the scope, a large movement of robins, several Pectoral Sandpipers, a remarkable 31 coots, and a scaup challenge. Canada Goose 15 Wood Duck 4 American Black Duck 1 Mallard 100 Blue-winged Teal 4 Northern Pintail 6 Green-winged Teal 150 Ring-necked Duck 120 Greater Scaup 1 Bufflehead 1 Hooded Merganser 8 Ruddy Duck 22 Pied-billed Grebe 2 Double-crested Cormorant 30 Great Blue Heron … Continue reading →

Hamilton House: June 2011

York County Audubon Posted on September 5, 2011 by ScottSeptember 5, 2011

On June 18, five of us set out across the dewy field above South Berwick’s Hamilton House. Along a path mown up the gentle rise, we stopped to inspect a singing indigo bunting, enjoyed a clear view of a newly fledged bobolink, and scoped a talkative yellowthroat perched for a long while up in a tree. We returned on the trails of Vaughan Woods State Park, which abuts the Historic New England property, a route that allowed us to hear a few wood warblers and see a close-up pileated woodpecker. We finished with a green heron stalking across the mud … Continue reading →

Brownfield Bog: June 4, 2011

York County Audubon Posted on June 30, 2011 by HarlequinOctober 2, 2011

Brownfield Bog is located near the Maine/New Hampshire border in Brownfield, Maine. It is an ideal location for multiple state listers, lovers of pristine Maine woods, and searchers for specific target species. Without question it is one of the top birding spots of interior New England. Maintained by the State of Maine as the Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area, it is comprised of 5,700 acres of shallow wetlands that are bisected by the Saco River and interspersed with forested tracts. Spring migration and the early breeding season are ideal times to visit this site.  York County Audubon sponsors a field … Continue reading →

Green Point: April 18, 2011

York County Audubon Posted on June 30, 2011 by HarlequinOctober 2, 2011

Four YCAS members joined Mike Fahay on April 18 for an enjoyable jaunt through the Green Point Farm Wildlife Management Area. The field trip started dramatically when a large flock of Rusty Blackbirds zipped over us. In a stiff breeze, we wandered the area, finding some early warblers, getting excellent views of Bald Eagles, and spotting six species of ducks at various points on Merrymeeting Bay. We had a respectable total of 35 species, along with good conversation and fascinating wildlife information from Mike. His extensive knowledge of flora and fauna was truly impressive. This spot is well worth multiple … Continue reading →

Rotary Park: May 12, 2011

York County Audubon Posted on June 30, 2011 by HarlequinOctober 2, 2011

Thursday, May 12, proved to be like so many other days this May — cloudy and chilly, with a biting northeast wind. Nine intrepid birders braved the conditions, in hope of viewing recently arrived migrants. It seems the northerly windflow may have hindered migratory progress; we saw only six species of warblers. Over a period of three hours, we were finally able to tease out a total of 37 species, including some new arrivals, such as Eastern Kingbird, Warbling Vireo, and Baltimore Oriole. Near the “beach,” we were treated with a pair of Eastern Bluebirds, which appear to be nesting nearby. … Continue reading →

Icy but Beautiful

York County Audubon Posted on April 12, 2011 by HarlequinAugust 11, 2011

At the (then) thermal nadir of the season sixteen thermally challenged troopers (as it turned out), attracted as moths to light to the instructive birding of Eric Hynes, joined him January 15 after navigating to The Nubble through Arctic smoke and sea fog at subzero temperatures. We flapped arms and rolled up collars while checking out the usual marine suspects around the light for a while, before Eric began to institute his program for keeping us thawed. Such a benign beginning: we thought his plan stopped at wind-breaks and automobile heaters with quick stops at sheltered feeders just inside The … Continue reading →

Birds Galore: Stratton Island 2010

York County Audubon Posted on January 10, 2011 by HarlequinOctober 2, 2011

Stratton Island is special! It is York County’s most northerly island and is the only island managed by Project Puffin in York County for tern survival. YCAS visited the island July 31 and six participants enjoyed spectacular looks at Common, Roseate, Least and Arctic Terns. The magic of being on an island dominated by tern sounds versus the busy sounds of summer cannot be given enough press. What a respite from the mainland! Our Birding Challenge contributions to Project Puffin made this field trip possible. Thanks to all who contributed as well as the island researchers who made difficult logistics … Continue reading →

Downeast Weekend

York County Audubon Posted on January 10, 2011 by adminMarch 28, 2011

Just a few highlights from a two day downeast field trip of the York County Audubon Society that tallied roughly 90 species: We hit Machias at high tide on Saturday morning, August 7. Bonaparte’s Gulls were as far upriver as I’ve ever seen them — all the way to the Bad Little Falls. A roosting flock of Lesser Yellowlegs and a distantly foraging flock of Common Terns slowed our rush to Lubec. Although we hit the South Lubec Sand Flats at the ideal time and tide, it was relatively lackluster. A strong northwest breeze the previous evening seems to have sent … Continue reading →
